2008 Winter Bead Show Classes
The BBS is offering a wide variety of classes at our Winter Bead Show on January 12-13, 2008. Whether you are a beginning beader or an experienced beader wishing to expand your repertoire in beadwork or jewelry techniques, we have a class for you. We have classes in stringing, PMC, braiding textiles to make your own necklaces, decorative knotting, seed bead weaving, wire wrapping, and more! Several of our teachers are nationally known instructors, including Joanne Bast, Julia Pretl and Murf Moorefield.

Anne Dilker
Students will learn to make round, square, and flat braids using a kumihimo disk. These braids may be used as bracelets or for other jewelry projects. If you have a kumihimo disk, by all means bring it along. If you do not have a disk, you may purchase one from the instructor.

Carleen Birnes
Students will use simple tools to create custom silver clasps and bails out of Precious Metal Clay. After kiln-firing, the finished pieces will be fine silver.
- Basic metal clay experience is required
- Students may bring their own materials or purchase them from the instructor as needed.
- Required kit: $60 (includes 16 grams PMC3, roller, cards paintbrush, mini palette knife, clay cleanup tool, scratch brush, burnisher, sand paper and carrying case)

Required Materials (NOTE: If you own your own tools you do not have to buy the kit): unopened package PMC3 (16 grams), 6 inches 16 gauge fine silver round wire, plastic roller, cards for measuring thickness, palette knife, exacto knife, stainless steel or brass scratch brush, fine tip paintbrush, fine grit sandpaper (600 or 800 grit), small container for water (cup or bowl), pen/pencil
Helpful to have: burnisher, wipe out tool, pin tool, texture tools, tweezers

Bonnie Dunn
Students will learn the Russian Spiral stitch and use it to make this beautiful necklace. When completed, your necklace should have the look and feel of a crocheted piece. Most students will not complete this necklace in class.

Anita T. Purcell
Students will learn how to string a single-strand necklace and how to attach a clasp the proper way (sterling silver clasp included in kit), crimp the wire, use crimp covers and finish with a tightly strung, yet flexible necklace. Most students will also complete a second necklace using one of several multi-strand techniques that will be demonstrated by the instructor.
- No experience required
- Required kit $45-$95 depending on choice (a limited number of kits in each of the single strand designs pictured are available. Email instructor at beadguiled@yahoo.com to reserve either the Green Burma Jade Large drops and Thai Hill Tribe Sterling Tubes and findings - $95, or Pink Jade Beads and Vintage Glass Ruffles with sterling silver findings - $45. Other kit prices will vary by choice, but none will exceed $75)

Joanne Bast
Make an airy pair of earring by constructing a nest of intertwined bead loops. Finish with fringe or bugle bead spikes.
- No experience required
- Required Kit $25 includes color copied instructions, assorted seed pony and pressed glass beads, beading thread, beading needles, gold filled ear wires (clip-ons available at additional charge), and pair of split rings.

Required Supplies: scissors, work mat, task light and extension cord (optional)

Julia Pretl
Students will learn to make these self-supporting, 3-sided beads. These beads are fun to make and work-up quickly. Students should complete at least 1 bead in class and will receive the information necessary to make 6 different patterns.

Materials included in kit (or you may bring your own): 1 1/2 grams of Japanese seed beads in assorted colors, size 46 bonded nylon thread, 3 size 8 or 10 beading needles
Optional materials: bead mat, work light and extension cord, chain nose pliers

Sally Stevens
The student will learn basic wire-working techniques to create the single coil, double coil, coil-wrapped bead, caged bead, jump rings, eye pin and double-wrap eye pin. The instructor will also cover tools, safety practices, types of wire and hardening wire.

- Limited to 15 students
Required Tools (Not included in kit): round nose pliers, wire cutter, chain or flat nose pliers with smooth jaws, 12 or 14 gauge mandrel for coiling wire

Murf Moorefield
Students will create a focal piece or a pendant using a bead, sterling silver wire and a few simple wire wrap techniques. Bring your favorite bead or use one supplied by the instructor.

Marie Glaser
Student will use Swarovski crystals and/or Swarovski pearls to create a bracelet that will dazzle your family and friends. Kits include choice of Swarovski crystals or pearls, sterling silver beads, chain and findings and beading wire.

Using Japanese paper cords and a macrame cord, students will learn to make a minimum of 3 decorative focal knots. After mastering The Trinity Knot (also known variously as the Good Luck, Abalone Shell and Josephine) students will build on this basic knot to learn as many other knots as time permits and discuss how to incorporate beads and findings to turn the knots into beautiful jewelry.

Students will learn to use Precious Metal Clay to make a two-sided textured pendant. Using syringe clay, students will draw a Cherry Tree on the pendant and attach to a "branch" bail. Supplies will be available to share in class or students may bring their own. Instructor will have some tools available for purchase.
- Experience with Metal Clay helpful, but not required
- Required kit $95 (includes 1 package each PMC3 25 grams lump clay and 9 grams syringe clay, fine silver wire work surface, roller, paintbrush, utility knife, sand paper, cards, brush and carrying case)

Optional Supplies (will be available to share in class): texture plates, lubrication such as badger balm or olive oil, small spray bottle for water, pin tool, burnishing tools

Students will learn to construct two dimensional silhouette figures in brick stitch. Focus will be on constructing the shape by varying the direction of the bead ladders and bead rows, as well as use of internal details.
- Experience with brick stitch helpful
- Kits not available, but beads may be purchased from instructor
- Required materials fee $20 (includes color instructions, use of tracing paper, colored pencils and other items)

Sally Stevens
Inspired by her daughter, Shannon Stevens, who makes beautiful lampwork beads, and by Connie Fox's tutorials, the instructor designed this stunning cuff bracelet. The student will learn wire coiling and spiraling techniques, how to make a swan clasp and the basic design elements used to create the bracelet.

Students will learn to use braids in jewelry designs without the need of clasps. In addition to making braids on the kumihimo board, students will learn to make a 4-strand round braid that does not require the board. If you have a kumihimo board, by all means bring it along. If you do not have a board, you may purchase one from the instructor.
